A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
