The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
